Abortion healing requires God's grace, mercy

  When Linda Raymond heard the news that Pope Francis expanded on priests' authority to absolve penitents from the sin of abortion, she was a little confused.

As teenagers, Linda and her now husband, Chuck, had an abortion. About a decade ago, they sought forgiveness in the sacrament of reconciliation at a Rachel's Vineyard retreat.

So what did the pope's announcement mean, exactly? Were their confessions valid?

"That was my first thought," Linda Raymond said. "For a long time, I thought I would never be able to be forgiven for what happened."

The answer quite simply is yes -- anyone who has received valid absolution for the grave sin of abortion in the archdiocese should be assured of the mercy previously extended to them in the sacrament of reconciliation.
