I am here today because I regret the decision I made in 1976, while a senior in college at N. C. State, to have an abortion. I believe it is time to not only speak the truth about abortion, but also to acknowledge that the Lord Jesus can heal and redeem us if we will surrender it to Him; none of which I ever thought would be possible, until it happened to me.
To go back to the time of the abortion: I was a senior in college and had never planned to have sex outside of marriage. During this time, several hurtful things had happened to me. The bottom line was, I decided I wasn’t going to be hurt anymore. In short, I became vey self-sufficient and began to live my life very much apart from God. That is, instead of pleasing God, I was pleasing everyone and everything except Him. When I learned that I was pregnant, I was devastated!!! Abortion, at that time had been legal for only several years, and was becoming very common. I just knew it was the only choice. They told me that since I was so “early” in my pregnancy that it was only tissue, not a baby. That was very important to me. Within a couple of days, I had the abortion. I have never felt so alone, empty, and ashamed in my life. Nothing really mattered to me. Since all of this had been very secretive, it seemed like I had begun living a lie. My life journey continued to erode in many ways over the next years. It wasn’t until I really surrendered it all to the Lord, and finally 29 years later, was able to “open that closed door” and allow the Lord, trust the Lord, to heal this whole area of my life. I know that it is only through Him, and His unfailing love that we are healed. I also know that abortion is not an option. The scars, lies, and horrors to the aborted babies and the parents are immeasurable. The truth is that abortion is another word for murder. Medical evidence is today showing that conclusively. The truth also is that abortion is killing our families, multigenerational. Only through a healing program like Forgiven and Set Free or Rachel’s Vineyard, where the Lord can guide, love, and cleanse us will we be able to be empowered through Him and speak the truth. This is where I found not only help and forgiveness, but also a burden for other girls, of all ages, that are still in prison with their past decision to have an abortion. I truly feel that the Lord is calling us as Isaiah 6 says:
“Who will I send?” asked the Lord. “Here I am, send me!”
We need to go! Be healed, and by Him who strengthens us, begin to reach out and tell others! I am here today only through our Lord Jesus’ strength. Please, do not wait 29 years as I did to surrender it to Him. There is no persecution, no person, no circumstance that the Lord will not empower you to “stand firm in Him.”
As one of the first generation of women in America to have had a “legal” abortion, and now looking back 32 years, I know WITHOUT A DOUBT that it is wrong’ it should not be an option to a crisis pregnancy. It is up to us to speak this truth in love-boldly, loudly, and no longer be silent. The private deliverance of the Lord deserves a public testimony! Thank you Lord Jesus for this opportunity to glorify You!
