Nancy joins Illinois state representatives gathering

Chicago Regional Coordinator, Nancy Kreuzer took part in the gathering of state representatives and religious community leaders to share how abortion hurts women.

Below is the article describing the event.

ACLU: State legislator recycles abortion legislation

Illinois state representatives and religious community leaders gathered at the Thompson Center Thursday to introduce proposed legislation aimed at improving awareness and increasing the safety of Illinois women choosing to terminate their pregnancies.

The HB 5463 Informed Consent Act and the HB 5462 Ambulatory Surgical Center Act were filed in the Illinois General Assembly earlier this week.

Under the proposed legislation, the state will provide greater regulation by implementing state inspections that hold abortion facilities to the same safety standards and requirements of all surgical treatment centers.

Rep. Jean Yves (R-Ill) a co-sponsor of the bill, said she was “shocked” to learn the varying degrees of regulations at abortion facilities.

“Some are regulated, some are partially regulated, some are not regulated at all,” Yves said. “Now, when you can go to a hospital and have to sign off on multiple forms for a simple surgery and then walk into an abortion clinic and not have to do any of that, I find that appalling. We want to make sure that a facility is safe, reliable and clean and [has] the same standards of ambulatory surgical centers.”

Nancy Kruezer, bill supporter and Chicago regional organizer of Silent No More, detailed her abortion experience.

“Twenty years ago, I didn’t have the understanding of the risks involved,” Kruezer said. [“People] go in there with their eyes closed. These two bills are vital in helping women make informed choices.

The legislation was inspired after the July 2012 death of Tonya Reeves, who underwent a surgical abortion at a Planned Parenthood facility in downtown Chicago.

“We’ve introduced similar legislation in the past,” said Rep. Thomas Morrison (R-Ill). “When I’ve introduced legislation like [the] Ambulatory Surgical Center Act, I was told by a colleague that abortion was just no big deal. About a year later Tonya Reeves is gone from the face of this earth. So, yes, this legislation is absolutely necessary.”

Morrison sponsored a similar house bill in 2012, HB 4117, that failed to pass into legislation early the next year.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois opposed HB 4117, stating the bill would close down women’s health clinics and reduce medical services across the state.

“HB5462 is precisely the same legislation,” said Ed Yohnka, director of Communication of ACLU Illinois. “It’s not designed to protect women, it is designed to deny women proper healthcare, in particular, denying them access to safe and legal abortions. “

Bishop Lance Davis and Pastor Ceasar LeFlore III have been working with community organizations to spread awareness in the communities they serve.

“We want to make sure [women in their communities getting abortions] have the right consultation and the right information, too,” Davis said. “That is not the case for Planned Parenthood2 or the case for abortions in this country at all. What we have is a fast food approach to ending pregnancy.”
